Tourism, the second largest foreign currency earner of Uruguay, is making strides into the world of hi-tech. Security is beefed up at the Punta del Este and Piriapolis beach resorts by using satellites and closed circuit television cameras.



The rising crimes in the resort region have forced the authorities to take the step. Tourists in large numbers from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile throng the beaches.



Installation of surveillance equipment was must due to increase in terrorism related activities in the country with its close proximity to the Tri-Border Area (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay).
